Prairie Political Science Association: Essay Competition

The Prairie Political Science Association sponsors an annual student essay competition. The same student paper may not be submitted to more than one of the following categories

Categories:

  • Best paper submitted by an undergraduate on any topic

  • Best paper submitted by a graduate student on any topic

  • Best paper submitted by a graduate or undergraduate student addressing politics on the prairies

Eligibility:

  • Students must belong to a university, university-college, or college that is a member of the Prairie Political Science Association

  • Political Science departments that are members of the Prairie Political Science Association may nominate one (1) paper in each category

  • Direct submissions by students will not be accepted

Stephen and Lynn Mandel Scholarship in Political Science

Value:  Variable (max $2,500)

Criteria:  To be awarded to student(s) with superior academic achievement entering any year of a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science or a Bachelor of Arts Honors in Political Science.  Selection based on academic standing.  Preference given to student(s) enrolled in the Community Engagement and Service-Learning certificate program. 

Deadline:  May 15

Application:  By nomination from the Faculty of Arts.

Alastair & Irma MacLeod Scholarship

Value: 2 @ $1,700 each

Criteria: To be awarded to students with superior academic achievement in Political Science, entering the third or fourth year of studies. Recipients will be chosen on the basis of academic standing and a demonstrated interest in socialist thought.

Students must:

  • Be registered in a BA program in Political Science and have completed a minimum of 60 units of course work toward their degree.

  • Demonstrate superior academic standing (GPA of 3.5 on a minimum of 24 units of course weight) in the current academic year. Official transcripts must be submitted.

  • Demonstrate an interest in socialist thought.

Application: Students must submit a letter of application (max. 600 words) to the Associate Chair of Undergraduate Programs in the Department of Political Science.This letter should outline their interest in the questions raised by the tradition of socialist thought.

F.T. Jenner Memorial Prizes in Canadian Studies

Value: variable ($1,500 -$5,000)

Criteria: To be awarded to students with superior academic achievement in Political Science.  Preference will be given to students whose stated intent is the further study of Canadian traditions, culture, and development.

Students must:            

  • Demonstrate superior academic standing (GPA of 3.5 on a minimum of 24 units of course weight) in the current academic year. Official transcripts must be submitted.

  • Demonstrate involvement in Canadian politics and society (community service, political involvement/activism, extracurricular activities, etc.).

  • Demonstrate plans for future studies in Canadian politics and society (in POL S and beyond, at the undergraduate or graduate levels).

Application: Students must submit a letter of application (max. of 600 words) to the Associate Chair of Undergraduate Programs in the Department of Political Science. This letter should outline how they intend to continue their studies in Canadian politics and society and specify any extracurricular activities and/or community service that reflect the student’s contribution to Canadian politics and society.

Scott Thorkelson Scholarship in the Study of Public Policy and Administration

Award: $900

Criteria: To be awarded to a student with superior academic achievement, entering the third or fourth year of undergraduate study with a major in Political Science. Selection based on demonstrated interest in Public Policy and Administration through: courses completed in the subject, and employment and/or volunteer activities related to either subject.

Students must:

  • Demonstrate superior academic standing (GPA of 3.5 on a minimum of 24 units of course weight) in the current academic year. Official transcripts must be submitted.

  • Demonstrate an interest in Public Policy and Administration through courses completed in the subject and employment and/or volunteer activities related to either subject.

  • Specify how they intend to continue their studies of, or contribution to, Public Policy and Administration.

Application: Students must submit a letter of application (max. of 600 words) to the Associate Chair of Undergraduate Programs in the Department of Political Science. This letter should outline their interest and experience in the study of Public Policy and Administration and their plans to continue their studies of, or contribution to, Public Policy and Administration.

Duncan Alexander MacGibbon Medal in Political Science

Award: medal

Criteria: To be awarded to the student graduating from Honors Political Science with Highest Distinction. Official transcripts must be submitted.

Roberta E. McKown Prize

Award: 2 @ $800. each

Criteria: To be awarded annually to a graduate of the Bachelor of Arts (AR20) degree in Political Science with the highest grade point average (GPA) in Political Science courses, provided that a minimum GPA is 3.5 is attained. The GPA in this case will be calculated on the basis of all political science courses taken as part of the Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Alberta. Official transcripts must be submitted. In the event of a tie, the award will be split between the students.
